What is abacus ?

Abacus is a method used by Chinese, Japanese and Koreans to improve mathematical skills. This system has now invaded our country. The Abacus has proven to be a successful tool not just for calculations, but also to enhance the concentration. This enhances the children's learning ability and enables them to do calculations mentally without the aid of any external tools like calculator, paper pen etc. Children are able to calculate with speed and accuracy using their own mental power. The use of this tool sharpens the child’s logical as well as creative thinking skills simultaneously. This leads to the whole brain development.

What kind of abacus is used in this program ?

The abacus used by Intelymind Abacus Academy is the Japanese abacus or Soroban. It has 15 rods, each with 5 beads. There are 4 beads below the beam, and 1 bead above the beam.

What is Mental Arithmetic and how is it done using Abacus as a base?

Developing Mental Arithmetic using Abacus is an easy and achievable task. We need a medium as well as a set of rules for developing and practising Mental Arithmetic. Abacus satisfies all pre requisites and is used as a ladder to reach Mental Arithmetic.

Is it true that Concentration skills are improved learning Abacus?

Yes absolutely, Abacus training builds Concentration Skills. Here is a good example why :

  • Working out written down problem - When you work on addition & subtraction with 10 rows of 2 digits each you have to move abacus beadsmore than 30 times and if you make even one mistake, your answer is incorrect. So to get the right answer the student has to be focused and alert. This gradual and regular process build concentration.
  • Dictation – This is also called hearing exercise. Course Instructor will read out the number and student will perform the calculation with or without abacus.
  • Visualization – The student will use the numbers from the book and use an imaginary abacus to perform the calculations.

Why don’t you conduct classes for the whole week and complete all the levels in a shorter span?

Abacus needs regular practice and each child need half an hour practice for 6 days to be prepared for the next class. We believe not to stress the child and so do not overburden him/her along with the school syllabus.

Does this program help a child who has been struggling with school math?

Children who have difficulty in following the methods for math that is taught in school are the ones who benefit the most from this program if they are committed to this program by doing their homework regularly.

Usually, children start to learn numbers by counting on their fingers. However, it becomes very challenging to comprehend the numeric relationships for numbers that are bigger than 10, due to the lack of tangible countable objects. Abacus helps children to easily grasp multi-digit numeric relationships by presenting the numbers and their relationships as concrete beads instead of regular abstract arithmetic processes.

Using abacus can also help younger kids to easily comprehend concepts of mathematics, such as value of numbers, decimal system, digit positions and so on. Once children understand numbers, they will probably become interested in mathematics.

Why is this Program only for children in the age group of 5 to 14 years ?

Numerous studies have shown that majority of the human brain development takes place till the age of 13 years. Constant practicing on an abacus stimulates the growth of brain cells to sharpen the mental formation for a child and enhances the coordination between eyes, ears and hands through multisensory teaching.

The optimum time to learn the abacus and mental arithmetic – as well as most other things - is from the tender age of 5. Children at this age have good control over their motor sensory skills and like to experiment and manipulate objects. Their ability to reason logically, curiosity and possession of a hungry appetite for acquiring new skills explains why they are able to absorb knowledge like a sponge absorbs water.
